Watson The Super Computer On Health Care

It might not know U.S. cities, but can Watson improve healthcare?

By Janet Fang | Feb 17, 2011 |

IBM’s supercomputer Watson conquered its human competition, scoring $77,147 during the 3-day Jeopardy! challenge that ended Wednesday.

(It even won the $1 million grand prize after an incorrect ‘U.S. Cities’ final Jeopardy response of “What is Toronto?????”)

Now what? Well, there’re a lot of data out there, and Watson’s Jeopardy-winning skillz could be perfectly tasked.

During round 2, Watson project leader David Ferrucci talked a little about future applications for health. Indeed, in the long list of IBM research projects, Advanced Healthcare Informatics is notably bulleted: “Work on extracting important HealthCare entities (e.g., drugs, diseases, procedures) from Clinical documents (e.g., textual progress notes).”

That is, information sifting and retrieval. Some ways to apply Watson’s tools in medicine:

And Watson, adds IBM’s Katharine Frase, continues to learn and refine its abilities.

How To Set Up An Ergonomic Work Enviornment

A work environment that’s good for the body is very important. Most of us spend hours each day sitting in front of our computer. Unless our chairs, our keyboards, and our desks are ergonomically efficient out body will suffer.

The first step to creating an ergonomic workstation is to consider how you spend most of your time at the workstation. Are you up and down during the day or do you sit virtually in one spot for most of the day? Are you looking form side to side, or do you sit directly facing one screen and spend most of the day that way? Are you locked into one keyboard, or do you use multiple keyboards? Do you spend much of the day on the phone?

Formaldehyde Free Nail Polish

After decades of doing my nails, my Naturopath looked at my newly manicured hands one day and said "You shouldn't be wearing products made with formaldehyde!" I was surprised to think I'd never even considered it so I went on a quest to find nail polish made without harmful ingredients.

Here's a good list to start shopping for something healthier for your nails.

Because we like the prices and the quality of many Avon Products, even my manicurist at the local spa was impressed with this nail polish.

Make An Inexpensive Wine Bag

Dish Towel as Wine Bag

Place the bottle along one side of the fabric so that the bottle’s top meets the top of the fabric. Fold the excess material at the bottom over the bottle, forming a pocket of sorts. Then roll the dish towel evenly and secure at the neck with ribbon.

Straw as Ketchup Unclogger

Insert a straw until it reaches the bottom of the glass bottle. Shake the bottle, then pour, leaving the straw inside. The airflow provided by the straw breaks the condiment-stopping vacuum.

Useful Things To Do With An Egg Slicer

Egg Slicer as Mushroom Chopper

Cut mushrooms into neat slivers, all without a cutting board to clean.

Egg Slicer as Strawberry Dicer

Give this classic tool a permanent spot on your kitchen counter and―presto!―you'll have perfect slivers of your favorite summer foods.

Egg Slicer as Mozzarella Slicer

Slice perfect pieces of mozzarella―and cut out the mess that goes with it. The wires divide the soft cheese into equal segments without squashing it. It's a clean cut, any way you slice it.
Chalk as Tarnish Prevention

Slow the tarnish on your good silver by tying up a few moisture-absorbing pieces in cheesecloth and store them with your cutlery for shinier flatware that reflects well on you in no time flat.

Super Two Piece Chip & Dip Set

Chip and Dip Set: from Crate & Barrel
12.5"dia.x2.5"H server, 4.5"dia.x2.75"H dip bowl.

Two-piece snack service pairs or separates for ultimate versatility. Simple design in white porcelain coordinates with most dinnerware and table appointments.
Cupcake Carrier as Knickknack Organizer

For beaders and for the 359 days of the year when you’re not  hauling cupcakes, use the cups to store jewelry or craft supplies.
Colander as Ice Bucket

Make ice cubes last longer at your next cocktail party: Put them in a colander set which is placed into a bowl. As they melt, the water will drain through the holes instead of sitting and turning the ice to slush.
Use Cooking Spray as an Ice Repellent

Before clearing snow off a driveway, liberally spray both sides of a plastic or metal shovel with cooking spray. The ice will slide right off the oily surface. It's the easiest trick for smoother snow removal.
Cooking Spray as Candlestick Cleaner

Celebrating by candlelight? Spray the inside of a votive holder with a thin coating before dropping in a tea light. After the candle has burned down, the remaining wax will slip out.
Baking Soda as Silver Polish

To polish silver: Wash items, then place on aluminum foil in the bottom of a pot. Add a baking-soda solution (¼ cup soda, a few teaspoons salt, 1 quart boiling water) and cover for a few seconds. The result? A chemical reaction that gets the black off the gravy boat.
